The Island
The Island provides two aspects to the fisherman:
On
the front side, there is a small area immediately to the left of
the trees (looking back towards the dam) which provides access to
a small shelf and water of up to 8 feet in depth. This area fishes
well at higher water levels and is normally accessible during the
summer as the hard clay lake-bed prevents weed growth. The other
front-side pitch is between the trees on the point of the Island.
This gives access to deep water but can be exposed and present a
restricted back-cast. Fishermen should be very aware of the swans
that nest on the approach to the Island every year - they don't
mind people walking through but don't try to get too close!
On the rear side of the island, a substantial silt
spit points straight up to the head of Butcombe Bay. This gives
access to deep water on each side and (at lower water levels) an
opportunity to fish almost in the heart of the Bay. Boat fishermen
can also use this a good anchorage in all but northerly winds and
the spit provides a good start or end to a drift into the main part
of the Bay.
